1/2 Day Trip Kinabatangan River

Itinerary:

11:30 hrs-1200 hrs: Pick up from any hotel within Sandakan or at our Sandakan office. Transfer overland to Nature Lodge Kinabatangan passing by small towns, oil palm plantation and the local villages. Most of the villagers are the Orang Sungei (derived from the Malay words, “the river people”). Their main source of living income is fishing and in time of low harvest, they build boat. Some of them working with the oil palm plantation companies or during the harvesting season in Gomantong cave, they work with the company appointed to harvest the swiflet bird’s nest. In some villages like Kampung Bilit, more and more villagers are directly involved in this new industry of tourism. A brief stop at Kota Kinabatangan, the nearest town from Nature Lodge Kinabatangan, to buy drinks and take photos.

1500 hrs: Arrive at Kampung Bilit jetty. Transfer to Nature Lodge Kinabatangan, just 3 minutes boat ride across the River. Upon arrival, our friendly staff will greet you and a welcome drink and some snacks will be served. Be at the jetty by 1600 hrs when our river cruise will commence.

1600 hrs: Put on your life jacket and start river cruising along Kinabatangan River in search for wildlife and birds-life. You can spot at least 6 different species of primates along the River including the Proboscis Monkeys, the Leaf monkeys, long and short tailed macaques, gibbons and even Orang Utan. During certain time of the year, you will also catch the Borneo Pygmy elephants at the riverbank. There will also be plenty of opportunities to see the white egret, oriental darter, rhinoceros hornbills and the buffey fish owl.
1800 hrs: By the time you get back to the Lodge, a sumptuous dinner will be waiting, set amidst the secondary forest of Kampung Bilit. After dinner, there will be a brief presentation on the wildlife in Kinabatangan area and also the conservation programme under taken by Nature Lodge Kinabatangan. You may want to contribute on the Voluntary Conservation Levy-VCL (RM20.00) which was initiated by WWF Malaysia and supported by the Kinabatangan-corridor of Life Tourism Association (KiTA).

2000 hrs: Your transfer will bring you back to your hotel within Sandakan, arriving at approximately 2200 hrs.

2D 1N Nature Lodge Kinabatangan Experience

Itinerary:

Day 1
Pick up from Wisma Khoo Siak Chiew (Sandakan Town) at 11.30hrs or Sepilok area at 12.30hrs and transfer to the Nature Lodge Kinabatangan which is located at the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary. The journey will take an hour forty-five minutes. Welcome drinks will be served upon arrival. After that there will be a lodge orientation. In the late afternoon you will proceed for the river cruise in search of wildlife and bird-life along the river banks. A guided night walks to enjoy the wilderness of the jungle right after the dinner. Over night at the lodge. (D)

Day 2
Wake-up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. At 06:00 hours, another Morning River Cruise awaits for you to view more birds and wildlife. Return to the lodge. After breakfast, we will transfer you to Sandakan Town / Sepilok / Sandakan Airport (B)

Itinerary:

Day 1

Various species of wildlife may be seen such as Proboscis Monkeys found only in Borneo, Leaf Monkeys, Macaques, Gibbons and exquisite insects and birds. One may also catch a glimpse of a wild Orang Utan and the newly discovered “Borneo Pgymy Elephants” (relatively, it’s the smallest elephant in the world). Return to the lodge for lunch after which another boat ride awaits you to cruise along the Kinabatangan River for more wildlife sight-seeing. Return before dinner. Dinner will be served at the lodge. After that, there will be a guided night walk to enjoy the wilderness of the jungle nearby the lodge. (B/L/D)

Witness the collecting of eggs from the nesting site, planting them in the hatchery and see baby turtles scrambling to the open sea upon released on the shore. Overnight at the Island Chalet.

Day 3
After breakfast, jungle walks along the trail to the Oxbow lake for bird watching. After lunch free and relax. Take another river cruise in the late afternoon to see more wildlife along the Sukau Kinabatangan River Bank. Overnight at Bilit Rainforest Lodge.

Day 4

Depart early morning and drive to Gomantong Cave located within the Gomantong forest reserve. Explore the biggest bird’s nest cave in Sabah. After lunch, transfer to Sandakan Airport or Hotel

Option B (End of Services: 1300hrs)
After breakfast, proceed to City Tour visit Puh Jih Syh Buddist Tample which offers a panoramic view of Sandakan Bay situated on hilltop Tanah Merah. Sandakan Central Market, the most amazing variety of fresh seafood and agricultural product. The Sim-Sim Water Village where the houses are all built close to the water surface while observing the fascinating view of the sea. Continue the tour to Agnes Keith House. The book Land Below the Wind and White Man Returns were written in the house and today the house turned into a heritage house providing interesting insight to life during British North Borneo. After lunch, transfer to Sandakan Airport or hotel. End of Services
